Internal links turn individual articles into a topic system that crawlers and readers can navigate.

Think in clusters, not isolated posts

A pillar page covers the subject broadly, while supporting articles answer narrower questions. Internal links connect the supporting pages back to the pillar and across closely related subtopics.

Use descriptive anchors

“Read more” tells neither the reader nor the crawler what comes next. A phrase such as “Core Web Vitals checklist” carries useful context without needing to stuff keywords into every link.

Keep important pages close to the homepage

Clicks are a simple way to reason about discoverability. Your highest-value content should generally be reachable in a few meaningful steps from the homepage or a strong category hub.

Link where the reader needs the next concept

The strongest internal links answer the natural next question. An article about RAG should link to embeddings, vector databases and reranking. A performance guide can link to browser rendering, image optimization and caching.

Audit orphan and dead-end pages

Every important article should have incoming links. When you publish a new post, add it to the relevant category, learning path or older guide rather than expecting the sitemap alone to do the discovery work.

Use the site as a graph

Once your library grows, review which pages receive the most internal links and whether those pages are actually your most valuable resources. A small number of well-connected hubs can make a growing archive much easier to navigate.
